Chimney stack repair is something we`d rather not think about until it is on its last legs and there really is no alternative but to bite the bullet and call someone in to have a look and give us the bad news. In reality chimney stack repair is essential because of the potential for damage there is if loose bricks or pieces of concrete flaunching were to come down on the roof  and break tiles allowing water to penetrate. Fortunately this is not so commonplace and chimney stacks in the main are quite resilient and can withstand  a lot of punishment from the elements before they need attention. However just like all other parts of the house chimney repair and maintenance are required from time to time and should not be neglected. It is a good idea to get out a pair of binoculars and have a good look at the state of the pointing and brickwork on your chimney. If the chimney needs re-pointing then in all probability the top will need re-flaunching as well and maybe the pots need to be replaced if they are cracked.

If the pointing is loose and falling out then in many cases some of the bricks will be  spalled and in need of replacing. These chimney stack repairs should be carried out without delay before it becomes dangerous and vulnerable in high winds or storms which can occasionally cause immense damage.

Chimney Stack Repair Costs

The cost of re-pointing a chimney stack varies depending on its size and can be anything from £200 to £450, while flaunching the top would be around another £250-£300. Needless to say that if you are having a new roof  installed this is a very good time to have your chimney stack looked at as there will most probably be a scaffold up so it will be very much easier to get at and this should bring the cost down.

Pointing a brick wall-video

Posted By on October 1, 2010

Pointing a brick wall is not a difficult operation as the video shows. All it requires is patience and a bit of practice. Pointing a brick wall that has become tired and jaded over the years is a magnificent way to improve the aesthetics of either a building or a garden wall. I personally love the fact that london stocks can be made to look as good as new with fresh repointing  The London Stock is a very tough durable brick that can last hundreds of years if the pointing is in good condition. The old garden wall in the video was given a complete facelift by raking out the old loose pointing to a depth of about 15mm and repointing completely. This is a job that is well within the capabilities of the average diy`er and one that affords enormous satisfaction when the work is completed.
